Bluemantles vs The Moose, Friday 11th August 2023

Bluemantles regain the Bairamian Cup to cap-off an unbeaten week

The annual tussle for the Bairamian Cup between The Moose CC and The Bluemantles CC at The Nevill Ground was a particularly enticing encounter this year, with The Moose seeking to secure an unbeaten season and The Bluemantles defending a 100% record in their Cricket Week hitherto. As such, both teams fielded strong sides at an unusually verdant Nevill where a thrilling 40-over contest ensued.

Having won the toss, the Moose decided to make first use of the wicket given The Nevill's "bat-first" reputation. However, The Moose top order found runs were unusually hard to come by, with the customary pace of the Nevill wicket and outfield lacking and some tight and canny bowling from The Bluemantles' spin-dominated attack. With wickets falling at regular intervals, The Moose amassed 169 for 8, largely thanks to the middle-order consolidation from M. Semmens (42*) and A. McDonald (37), which seemed c.20 runs shy of par.

The Bluemantles got off to a good start in pursuit of their 170 target with a rapid-fire 38 from Charlie Hobden, but were gradually reeled in by spin-twins J. Allen and M. Semmens. Allen continued his impressive debut season form, compiling tidy figures of 3 for 23 from his 8 overs (say it quietly, but The Moose may have finally found a long term replacement for the inimitable Rupert Harris). Semmens was miserly with 1 for 20, but deserved more with several half-chances not taken. J. Howie (2 for 29) and F. Tomlinson (1 for 23) continued to apply good pressure with the ball, but a composed partnership between Collins (31*) and Monnington (43) was enough to see the scores tied in the 40th over and the Bluemantles secure victory by 2 wickets, with an ill-timed No Ball from McGahan (1 for 19) to end the innings and match in a rather anti-climactic fashion.

LBCC vs The Moose, Sunday 30th July 2023

A new fixture on the cards for the Moose this year saw the team making the trip into the unchartered territory of Hertfordshire to take on the LBCC Sahibs in Little Berkhamsted. The Moose lost the toss and were unfortunately sent in to bowl with some ominous clouds brewing above. The game went to 19 overs before the rain interrupted play and players were called off the field, never to return. The persistent rain mean that after an early tea and a few beers between teams, the game was called off. The game saw the unofficial debut of Josh Howie (cousin to James Howie – Current Club Captain), son of co-founder Rob Howie.

Waldron vs The Moose, Sunday 9th July 2023

The Moose were welcomed to Waldron after a spout of unsuccessful attempts at securing an illusive win at what had become a bit of a fortress for Waldron in previous years. Moose were sent in to bat first with contributions coming from most batsmen, most notably a very well played innings from M. Murray (76*) supported by A. McNaught (65). Two explosive innings at the back end from J. Allen (47*) and T. Ogden (44) saw the Moose post a dangerously competitive total of 302.

On a slightly damp pitch, the ball was not doing much and allowed Waldron to dig in slightly before the Moose opted for some spin which saw both the floodgates open and the wickets tumble. A potential record number of lost balls initially looked worrying for the Moose until the catches started to stick and Waldron ran out of steam. The pick of the bowlers were J. Allen (2-17) and H. McGahan (2-8). The Moose ended the day winning by 106 runs.

The Griffin vs The Moose, Sunday 11th June 2023

Grins from the Moose side

A. Kritzinger after a fantastic knock

The Griffin batted first and posted 232 in their 35 overs. Contributions from all bowlers meant that the total was kept to a gettable target despite a quality ton from their opening bat. H. McGahan with a trademark 3-37 the best of a good bunch.  After a quick fire start from S.Morten and a characteristically questionable dismissal of A.McDonald saw the arrival of Baby-AB himself, A. Kritzinger (121). Kritz proceeded to carve out a maiden ton for the Moose in typical fashion and to bring the game to a nail-biting end with 12 required off the last two overs. In steps H.McGahan and in three balls (4, 2, 4) removes any doubt of a Moosey win as P.Kearney adds a single and runs through a bye to seal a fantastic victory for the Moose!

CTCCC vs The Moose, Sunday 14th May 2023

After our inaugural fixture of the season was rained off (again) Barn Elms played host to the Moose’s first game in 2023. The sun was out and support was in abundance. Moose opted to bat first and quickly felt the rust of a long winter as the top 3 were skittled for just 15 runs. With some work to do, M. Hands (64) and A. McNaught (36) stepped into the middle to navigate through some turbulence. A solid partnership saw them steady the ship and allow the tail to wag. In stepped J. Allen on debut, smashing a lusty 49* off minimal deliveries to guide the Moose to 221/9 after their allotted 35 overs. The total felt competitive, if not a little low.

After an almost unplayable opening spell for little reward (other than climbing pressure) from H. McGahan and T.Ogden. J. Allen (4-21) and M. Hands (2-16) entered the attack. The two got to quick work, dismantling the top order. Contributions from B. Broyd and s. Morten saw CTCCC ultimately skittled for 134 handing the Moose victory on the day. Serious Jug avoidance from debutant J. Allen. Allez!

All smiles after a few bottles of wine

The Moose enjoyed a delayed Christmas dinner to cap off the end of a fantastic (and unbeaten) 2022 season. The 10 Cases in Soho played host to a jovial evening held in great spirit with Moose members, old and new, recanting some memories from seasons passed.
