The Moose Take to the Water – Golf Day Match Report, October 6th 2006 at Dale Hill

After a long and intense build up the eclectic and multi-talented Moose Golfers gathered again at Dale Hill to clash racks for the Harris Trophy. Despite a severe weather warning the players were not to be deterred from going out and as the buggy’s lined up there was a noticeable tension in the air, despite this last years winners, Judd and Evans, displayed quiet confidence.

In heavy rain and gusting winds the teams took to the 1st tee with at least the added benefit that the old Moosey nasal flaps could close whilst under water. Some Moose had decided that protective clothing was not for them and playing in the buff was considered as an option. Not withstanding this obviously bold thought most were relieved not to have their game distracted by a display of Moosey Manhood.

A three ball of James, Neame and Stewart were first off followed by an ever bedraggled Moose herd. On the 5th the closest the hole proved difficult with few making the green but Atkinson using all his cunning ricocheted one off a tree to take the prize. With the Moosey getting progressively soft and moist the match moved on until at the 9th a particularly heavy downpour forced the retirement of Judd an Atkinson followed shortly afterwards by Evans and Brocklehurst. By the 11th the Old Raggedy One, by this time considerably more raggedy than usual, called for the 13th (and longest drive hole) to be the last of the match. Neame, from the first team out had hit a blinder and placed the marker, however with no lead in his pencil failed to put his name on the card. This resulted in Burke with a shorter drive staking his claim to the prize a state that was amicably reversed in the club house. There was some delay getting all the team to the 19th partly due to Mrs Quitmann being called for dry undies for her husband.

Once all the Moose were ensconced with libation in hand the cards were tallied and the trophy winners were found to be the fine trio of James, Neame and Stewart. Judd and Evans duly presented the mighty trophy to the the winners who will share it until the next outing of this merry band. It was later reported that a sort of Cherie Blair moment had occurred with Stewart reportedly saying of his team mates “they weren' t that f*****g good”

Match Report: Moose vs Buzzards – September 9th 2006

The Howie Cup will remain in Dorset for another year, following another closely fought contest at Bowerswaine. The Moose batted first and amassed 199 all out, with useful contributions from Alex John (34) and Ed Gay (30), but no-one was able to construct a really big innings. The Buzzards batted sensibly, with particularly fine innings from Ed and Rupert Haycock scoring 50 and 70 respectively. The Moose bowled and fielded valiantly (Kingham 2 for 31 from 5 overs, Stewart 2 for 31 from 7 overs), but were unable to take their chances which may have altered the result in their favour. Catching practice may be the order of the day next year!!
