Moose Golf Day, 19th October 2007 at Dale Hill Golf Club

Rupert Harris presents the Harris Trophy to Nick Ogden

Michael Day and Nick Ogden -
Winners of the 2007 Moose Texas Scramble

  • Second was Ed Atkinson + Nigel Wheeler with a score of 83 and third was Andy James + Alex John with 85

  • Winner of 'Closest to the Pin' was Andy James, and the 'Longest Drive' was Ed Atkinson

Friday the19th of October 2007 saw 14 externally friendly but internally extremely competitive Moose meet at Dale Hill Golf Club. This was the 5th Moose Cricket Club Golf Day.

Last year the Harris Trophy - the only animal to have silver golf clubs as teeth, was won in the most appalling weather by 3 people - Robert Stewart, Andy James and Jasper Neame. This year in conditions that would have made a hedgehog think twice about hibernating, it took two unassuming and modest players to wrestle the trophy into their grip!

It was expected that the recently appointed High Sheriff of Kent, N.Wheeler Esq. would put up Ryder cup opposition nailing approach shots with his near genius laconic skill. He did this and more with his partner Edward Atkinson, who along with Rupert Harris, Jasper Neame and in fact everyone, thought they would win. Everyone except for the two slightly older players who teed off first believed they were in with a chance.

The Harris Trophy, in the guise of a bronze Moose went to the Chairman and his team mate, Michael Day. Day left early to go to Glyndebourne throwing his clubs into the boot of his suv with fury and intemperate language. "There is no way we could win with that crappy performance" he said. An hour later he was delerious with joy (sadly not due to the attentions of any of the girls at the bar).

Longest drive by a few yards was Ed Atkinson congratulations, and nearest to the pin, although at first claimed by Patrick Hole, went to Andy James.

Sincere appreciation goes to the Nick Ogden for organising the event, thanks to the greenstaff and the club, and in the true Moose tradition a generous round of applause to the worthy winners!

Moose Anniversary: Inaugural Tour to Paris (1987)

It was twenty years ago that the first Moose herd boarded the bus at Victoria Coach Station, bound for Paris. In the halcyon days of Merrydown Cider and the Huge Cheese Company, a very drunk and flatulent band of cricketers arrived on the Rive Gauche after several hours of watching hard core porn on the team vehicle, featuring the much missed Stormy the Horse.

Led by Nick Ogden, then one of the Fulham Road’s premier fireplace restorers, Robert Howie and other Moose of yesteryear, the portents were not good. Arriving with 5 minutes to spare before departure, Messrs Atkinson and Yorke had slightly over-trained in the then trendy 151. Greeted by the squat John Lynch, emergency vodka rations were administered, which at 8am had a recuperative affect. As we pulled down Warwick Way the first herbal cigarette was ignited and the tour went downhill from there.

After several attempts to turn off the Peripherique, we then traversed the Pont Neuf at least half a dozen times as the coach driver, evidently overcome by the Moose fumes, confessed to being hopelessly lost. Luckily Rob Howie had elected to fly to Paris and take the master suite at the 2 star hotel that we had selected, and we were guided in safely. More drinks were needed to calm irate passengers such as Heron and Avard, and supper was taken at the Café du Merde opposite the condemned building that served as our roost. As if by magic guitars were produced and the Moose burst into song. The old Eurovision classic “Joycey, Joycey, Show Us Your Growler” was aired once or twice, much to the chagrin of not only Joyce (a fellow tourist), but her bearded partner, Ian Hunt, the intense Mazda salesman. After finding a word that rhymed with Hunt, they were dispatched into the warm Parisian night to take the air.

The next day was exactly what we were hoping for. A light drizzle fell from grey skies and the Moose enjoyed a couple of croissants and a Pelforth before trotting off to the Standard Athletic Club, Meudon, where wealthy ex-pats play tennis, swim and enjoy cocktails by the pool. Greeted by a bemused Indian called Ian Culley, the Moose took on more liquid and elected to field (or bat, this is where it gets a bit hazy). Some uncharacteristically good cricket was played, Moosey realising that in fact they were of superior standing to these people who couldn’t hack the UK. The maxim NKBV was actually observed, and despite a mighty effort, the tourists fell slightly short, unused to playing on matting.

Undeterred by this loss, the swaying herd moved on to the Temple of Helena, a Greek restaurant that wouldn’t necessarily be one’s first choice in Paris. However, after much plate smashing, table dancing, joke telling, singing and bonding, it was agreed that this was indeed the best Greek restaurant in the Rue Napoleon and an inspired choice. Their stocks of Metaxa took a hammering at the hands of the incredibly thirsty John Lynch, and at a very late hour it was back to the Café du Merde. Greeted with a gin and cockroach, the Moose struck up again, without Joyce and Ian Hunt. Amazingly, at 3am, having set off two days earlier from Sussex, Ian Graham-Scott and family arrived.

The next day’s cricket was not good. Graham-Scott, whose family were not allowed out of their 20 year old Volvo, bowled very badly indeed. Urgent back-up was required but the cupboard was bare. The ex-pats, who themselves had had a late night (11pm) were cautious in their approach, but again seemed to win the game.

At this point the Moose homing instinct kicked in, and once we had woken the driver from his deep reverie, the coach chugged out of Paris, around the Peripherique only twice, and headed for Calais. Loud snoring from the Moosettes threatened to interrupt the 28th showing of Stormy’s epic movie, but luckily everybody had got the gist by the time we arrived back in Blighty.

These were the days before mobile phones had been invented, so it was only at the reunion drinks at Crocs in Fulham the following week that we discovered the Graham-Scott family had mistakenly taken the road to Belgium, ending up in Metz, and missing not two, but three, ferries.

A great trip and the inspiration for many more. Sadly some of our dear old friends from Paris ’87 are no longer with us….Rob Howie, Bibi Lynch, but the spirit lives on and the Moose will forever roam.

Moose vs Buzzards, September 8th 2007

In this regular end of season fixture for the Moose, a mathematical error from the captain saw the Moose on the back foot before the game had started, with only 10 players making the trip to Dorset. Despite repeated pleas from fellow Moose, the President couldn't be persuaded to roll back the years and don the whites! Nevertheless, having won the toss the Moose took to the field in good spirits. A tight opening spell from Smellie, A. and Price ensured that the Buzzards were restricted to no more than 5 runs an over for the first 10. Macbean then continued this trend with a wicket and a couple of tight overs, though seemed to lose his rhythm with the arrival of English Test legend Robin Smith at the crease. Macbean wasn't the only one who seemed somewhat fazed by this cricketing great, as John sent down a couple of wild and expensive overs! Luckily young Moose debutant Hamish Smellie showed bottle to have Smith stumped after smart work from James behind the stumps. Spinners Budd and Harris got some good overs under their belts (Budd in particular turning a couple very sharply), though too many "buffet" balls were on offer from both. Neame and Smellie A. returned at the death to try and keep a lid on things, but 250+ was probably 50 runs too many to chase down.

The Moose reply started well enough with the 2 AJ's looking fluent on the front foot, John in particular driving through the covers with both venom and panache. John was unlucky to be dismissed, bowled off his pads, and from there the Moose lost wickets at regular intervals. Harris delivered a couple of lusty blows, but he seemed more preoccupied with the size of Budd's Norwegian au pair's mouth and what would and wouldn't fit in it (!), and the death rattle duly ended his innings. Budd himself looked in rather good touch, but when James' stubborn resistance was ended, and Neame was beaten all ends up by a straight one, the Moose's hopes of victory were extinguished.

A great day was duly rounded off with the Moose being invited to a local party by our generous host Chris Haycock. I would love to be able to give an account of the night's activities, but this naughty Moose doesn't remember a great deal...

Saplings vs MiniMoose, Chalvington, August 5th 2007

Tom Ogden ready for action

Ogden, Atkinson & Yorke Senior at the ready!

In the inaugural game against the Saplings, Tom Ogden won the toss and elected to field. The Saplings lost early wickets until their captain Gus Taylor came to the crease and scored a swift 21 runs helping them towards a final score of 128 (Josh Howie 3 for 10, James Tomlin 2 for 11, Tom Ogden 2 for 17 and Gus Atkinson with a tight 3 overs for only 4 runs).

Minimoose settled quickly into their stride with Marcus O'Riordan and Harry Carden scoring 28 and then Tom Ogden and Josh Howie with 24, to canter to a final total of 194. Well played Minimoose…. again!

The rematch has already been set for August 6th 2008, so put it in your diaries.

Moose Victorious at Fletching

Moose victorious side at Fletching

James and Harris march off having secured victory

Moosette lend their support

Go Jonny Go!

At the scenic ground of Fletching, the Moose bowled the Griffin out for 88!

The bowling was spearheaded by Johnny Bass who was frugal but unsuccessful, and the welcome return to form of Steve Macbean, with 3 for 17 off 8 overs..... They were more than ably backed up by Dan Burke 2 for 2 off 4 overs and 'Audi Man' Rupert Harris with 4 for 17 off 7. The innings was finished off with some surprising accuracy from Budd's leg spin! Small targets have caused Moosey problems in the past, but that seemed to be history with a fine opening stand of 38 from Messrs Burke senior and Todd. Then 5 Moose wickets were taken for a mere 10 runs and the game looked unnervingly open! Robin Budd's controlled 20 and Andy James' dogged defence brought Moosey within sight of victory, before the captain clipped the ball off his legs for the winning runs.

Moose won by 3 wickets and Robin Budd was voted 'Man of the Match' by the opposition. Well played Moose and we look forward to the return fixture next year.

Match Report: Moose X vs Chalvington & Ripe - Sunday May 20th 2007

Victorious Moose X!

After a very disappointing in fact non existent turnout from the Moose bucks, Robert nee Stewart had a tough time in raising a side for this first game of 2007.

However we took to the sun drenched field of play with ten Moose, which included as it turned out, some young players that would challenge the bucks who had other better things to do.

After loosing the toss and put in the field R de M skipper for the day, wisely but with little other option gave the ball to the plethora of potential new talent, James Russell 6-28-1, Mathew Block 6-25-1, James Howie 8-10-2, Harry Megahan 6-21-3 and Patrick Kearney 2-10-2 and with the added spectacle of Steve McBean 4-23-1. The Moose had the opposition all out half an hour before tea for 129. Aided, despite not being able to get his legs together fast enough, by some fine keeping from Jeremy Burke. The top scorer for Chalvington by a long way was their Skipper Ian Fletcher-Price with 54.

With what looked like a very achievable total the Moose bats of proven record set forth, however at 4 for 17 R de M was looking for the red wine. He should not have feared as No 5 Patrick Kearney who ended 74 not out aided by Harry Megahan scoring 16 guided the team home to win by 4 wickets. Allez Moose!!

MiniMoose on Tour in Barbados, April 2007

Bondage Moosey!

Moose Tour to Bequia

BEQUIA CRICKET CLUB!!
Garvin, Renton and Ellis (coach) trying to persuade the Moose to tour Bequia

The Moose tour is still on, but hanging by a thread. The thread is the Bequia cricket authority’s ability to turn the above pitch into something resembling a wicket. They have undertaken to do so, and have launched a big push to revive Bequia cricket, encouraged by the state visit of Moose President, N.G. Ogden, who flew in from his Barbadian love nest during the World Cup.

We are assured by our man in The Grenadines, Elson Crick, that they will pull out all the stops. We have reconsidered where the main tour should be based, and decided that IF we go the mainland of St Vincent makes better sense. We have been promised fixtures on the Test Ground at Arnos Vale, and will be very well looked after. The ferry ride to Bequia is one hour.

Following 3 or 4 games on St Vincent, we will ease across to Bequia for the final gala game, and a few very big nights out.

OR……we bin the Bequia trip as too chancy, and plan a serious tour to Cape Town in ’09-10. This gives us the certainty of good cricket, good weather, an amazing country and a very favourable exchange rate. There is also England v South Africa at Newlands on Jan 2nd, so New Year sipping the very acceptable Cape whites, a bit of a tour….

Let us know what you think….

WAKE UP MOOSE!!!

It’s good to see the Moose already working to the Caribbean maxim of “Soon come mon, what de hurry?”, but in order to get the tour on the road, there is plenty to do.

The reasonably easy part is getting there and back, and staying somewhere pleasant. What I need to know is simply who is coming.

It may seem a long time before we travel, but it will be upon us very soon, so I would advise getting in touch with the Hon Moose Treasurer, Mr A James, to sort out bank mandates and deposits.

WE NEED A PRETTY STRONG SIDE. Please would the likes of Alex John, Henry Kingham, Jasper Neame and other young Moose put their minds to the tour for a moment. Nixon Maclean is organising the cricket in Bequia, so I need to give him an idea of who we are, strength of the teams, especially if we are to play a one day ‘test’ against his invitation team.

This is a great tour to be on; I do urge you to try and confirm, make a financial commitment, and respond like good Moosie.

It would be embarrassing to cancel the tour, especially celebrating 20 years since we were last there, and the 25th anniversary of the club.

Moose25: Moose Plans Caribbean Tour, March 2008

Edward T. Atkinson has been appointed 'Tour Manager' for the Moose anniversary tour to the Caribbean in Spring 2008...

Please read the attached (see below) and pre register yourselves, as the numbers will be limited. The departure date will be SATURDAY MARCH 29th 2008. It will be almost 20 years to the day, since the Moose set forth to the West Indies on our tour to Jamaica... some of you were there, but probably don't remember much!

Watch this space, more news will follow on the web...

In a moment of enlightened inspiration, it has been suggested that the Moose celebrates its Silver Jubilee, which falls next year, with a tour to the West Indies. None of your commercial World Cup rubbish, over-priced rum punch and commemorative T Shirts, this will be the real thing.

Bequia

This beautiful island, nestling quietly in the Grenadines, will host the Moose family for 3 games over 10 days, allowing us to explore the beaches, dives and surrounding islands, mix with the locals and drink in the unique atmosphere that the Moose President has exuded from his Speldhurst hacienda for many years. We will also offer coaching and some equipment supply to the local teams that we play. I am also hoping for a pro signing or two to strengthen the side.

I will be looking for some heavy sponsorship to help keep the costs down, so expect to hear of deals being struck with airlines, bat makers, hosiers and leisurewear suppliers, ensuring that only smart Moose disembark in Bequia. We will be seriously kitted out, down to our beach towels.

I will ascertain exact dates from my contacts on de Island, but would like an indication from you as to whether this is one for you. I envisage the trip costing no more than £1500 per head, including flights and hotels and the odd local delicacy of jerk chicken and roti. In the next couple of months I will set up a bank account that will take monthly standing orders if that is a preferable way to fund your trip, and a deposit. You may also pay in a lump sum, once I have a final costing.

This is a great opportunity to have a fabulous holiday, play some cricket and see a beautiful part of the world. Take it.

More to follow…..Check out www.friendshipbayhotel.com. This is our likely accommodation.

First Sponsorship Deal Struck

The Tour Management for the Moose25 trip to Bequia, commencing March 29th 2008, is pleased to announce that the first sponsorship deal has been negotiated with Marketform Ltd, a leading specialty underwriter in Lloyds. Already generous supporters of the Professional Cricketers Association, Marketform CEO Simon Turner agreed to an initial cash sponsorship of £5,000, as well as agreeing to host a fundraising dinner for Chance to Shine, the Moose25 adopted charity, where a number of current England cricketers will help raise additional funds for equipment for Bequia schools and clubs, costs of the tour and the charity.

All Moose keen to register for the trip should let either Nick Ogden or Ed Atkinson know, and dust off the cheque book for the deposit of £250, payable to Moose CCC, and send to Andy James, the mighty Treasurer.
