As always both teams crossed their fingers as the Skippers went out to toss up. The Bluemantles the happier of the two as Tim Brocklehurst won the toss and elected to bat.

Priestman, last years centurion stepped to the crease alongside Fitzgerald. Harry Mcgahan in his second Bluemantle fixture opened the bowling with Tom Tom Ogden. Both bowlers bowled accurately and skilfully. Andy James had earned himself a round after spilling a caught behind chance of a fired up Tom Ogden leaving Priestman to go on to make a well played 70. Exlcuding Betis’s 37 there was a lack of support from the team resulting in a Bluemantles total of 177, Harry Mcgahan the pick of the bowlers with figures of 33-3 of 12 overs.

Chasing 177 on what was usually a good pitch the Moose marched out feeling confident. This was quickly quashed by a brilliant spell from Fitzgerald who claimed 4 for 17 of ten overs, Rex Boulter the only batsmen to show any resistance with a patient knock. At 87-5 the Bluemantles looked down and out. The Bluemantles hadn’t envisaged Luke Fisher to step to the crease at number 7 and hit a nonchalant 66 of 27 balls. The crown and opposition were stunned as the Moose marched to victory with two wickets to spare.

After weeks of administrative turmoil and negotiation, the Moose Mcgahan contest finally beckoned. After partaking in an essential pre-match swift in the now Latvian owned Oak Inn, the Moose’s youthful squad made its way down to the College to inspect the pitch and opposition.

Assembled with his team of Lincoln College Goblinite’s surrounding him, The Mcgahan XI skipper, Harry Mcgahan, was in a confident mood. The Moose C.C. vs Mcgahan XI fixture, now in its third year, was tightly poised with honours even after Patrick Mcgahan hit the winning runs in last year’s closely fought tussle.

Harry won the toss and rather like England earlier in the week, bravely decided to stick the Moose in. A relieved opposition took their pews as Moose C.C. veteran Andy James and Newcomer Imran Iqbal wandered to the middle. Overcast conditions and a curious patch of moisture at one end promised for a challenging opening period for the Moose’s openers.

The top order crumbled Andy James, Patrick Watson and Tom Rayner all contributing with single figure scores. The Goblins were on top. With the Moose in desperate need for a period of consolidation, debutant Harry Reilly stepped to the crease. Harry known more for his lusty blows left an anxious crowd watching closely. Four or Five overs later Harry had amassed 40 runs and the balance had been tipped back in the Moose’s favour with Imran still at the crease. Reilly fell leaving skipper Howie to come to the crease. What can only be described as 10 overs of uncultured filth resulted in Imran and Howie achieving their half centuries, which concluded a rollercoaster of an innings.

Mcgahan Innings

With 215 on the board, Moosey spirits were high. Imran fresh from his Boycott-esque knock prepared to open alongside the Chairman’s spawn, Tom Ogden.

Openers Morten and Harris got off to a dangerous start amassing 60 swiftly. Two quick wickets exposed the Goblins middle order J Moore and Armstrong falling for a duck and three.

Captain Harry Mcgahan marched to the crease fearful of the inevitable introduction of James Barry. Having tormented Harry in previous years Barry struggled to rekindle such form. Consequently Harry and Woodman milked Barry’s customarily erratic bowling, the highlight a glorious reverse sweep from the skipper. Mcgahan and particularly Woodman were batting superbly both nearing their fifties. It was time for an opportunist. Earlier claiming to be a part time bowler skipper Howie audaciously employed Reilly’s services. Harry bowled tightly whilst wickets tumbled the other end, Barry claiming Harry and Tom Rayner dismissing Woodman. A brief cameo from Max Mcgahan looked to be the Goblin’s last hope, Riley struck and the game was over. Thank god for Harry Reilly’s modesty the gamble had paid off. Harry had won the game with an astonishing spell ending on 4-3.

Three years and three great games let’s hope the excitement continues.

Thanks to all the guys from Oxford for travelling down particularly Merdo who made the trip down from Scotland, top form!
