Match Report: The Moose V Buzzards - Saturday 10th September 2005

The Annual pilgrimage to massage Chris Haycock's ego took place on September 10th.

Even the prospect of celebrity involvement was not sufficient to lure our match manager, Ed Atkinson, down, as he had a ticket to the Test, but he didn't even make the mighty Test...!

The merry Moose loosened up nicely at the Horton Inn, welcoming some very pleasant newcomers to the fold. Well done to Hadcock and Budd for swelling the numbers.

On arrival at the ground, it became obvious that Robin Smith hadn't heard that Stewart Bob wasn't playing as he was insistent on playing for Moosey. Actually, well done Chris for lending us the mighty Judge who was a great bloke. ( more tickets please, Judge)

Moose took to the field and bowled as well as I can remember; Steve Macbean - mean and nagging, Chris Harding - guileful and accurate , Rob Williams - fast and furious, and Al Smellie - fast talking, were magnificent. In addition the fielding was faultless, with Andy James catlike and Robin Budd full of it.., and we restricted The Buzzards to a low flying 128, with the obdurate Jenke playing what proved to be the vital role in his 46*. Well done us at this stage.

The total should have been within reach of a good Moose batting line - up, bolstered by Smith. After a reasonably solid start the partnerships failed to materialize with a few of us " getting in " but then out. But while Rob Williams was in we had a good chance and the total was tantalizingly close, but a combination of Clive Tory's excellent spell and weak shots enabled the locals to pull off an annoying, but well fought victory. I was sorry to have to leave early, but glad not to have suffered Haycock's gloating!

As ever, a lovely place to play and well done Chris for keeping the place looking so grand, and for his hospitality. Selectors need to meet early next summer to plan revenge.

Allez Moose!

Match Report: The Moose V Waldron - Saturday 20th August 2005

Despite the late bolstering of strength by the addition of Rob Williams, currently on summer contract with Middlesex the Moose still only fielded ten due to a sudden and to all accounts severe attack of amnesia by one of our number, a sign of creeping middle age I understand.

The loss of the toss put the Moose in the field, overnight rain prevented the openers Rob Williams and Steve Mcbean from being a devastating as usual even the skimming Barns Wallis style of Mcbean failed to have the opposition baffled. Contrary to expectations the wicket was taking spin and two fine spells of very tight bowling from James Howie and Chris Trigg tied Waldron down while taking two and one wicket respectively, James taking the key wicket of the Gattingesk Joe Butcher.

The Moose were characteristically agile in the field with Alex Howie emulating his late Uncle Rob’s one handed catching style developed in order to be able to still hold a glass of ‘Vintage Dry’ while in the field. Behind the Wicket the tight and experienced duo of Jeremy Burke as keeper dismissive of the need for a Fine Leg and the magnificent Nick Ogden at first slip proved impenetrable, this, despite Nick being close to giving birth. The later half of the Waldron line up were eroded in clinical fashion by Alistair Smellie and Rob Williams with two wickets each and not withstanding John Haywood’s 47 for Waldron the Moose were left needing 137 to win.

The Moose dressing room decided to go behind the pavilion to watch paint dry as Jeremy made his twelve, although the determination and elegance with which this was achieved shone through the several hours of crease time. Alex Howie played across, over and slightly around a straight one for 0, followed in short time by his brother for 1. This Moose hiccup was halted by an almost faultless partnership of 75 by Chris Trigg 51 and Rob Williams rapid 47 largely made up from six sixes. In the later part of Chris’s innings he was partnered by his father Bruce who steered the total to within six runs of victory before running out his son [Chris you should know dads do this sort of thing] Rupert Harris the skipper for the day then came in to face and, in the knowledge that it was now well beyond libation time deposited the first delivery into the Rowan tree at mid off for six, giving the Moose a 4 wicket victory. This now leaves the Moose with one remaining game against the dastardly Buzzards to record an undefeated run this season, Allez moose!!

Tom Ogden captaining the Minimoose in their inaugural game, won the toss and inserted Waldron. After a slow start, Waldron found some momentum and ended up with a score of 85 in the sixteen over game. Minimoose started their innings at a furious pace, only to be thwarted by the loss of too many wickets, and ended up with 71 in what was a very exciting game. Well played Minimoose and we look forward to more matches next year.
